New mother tested for opiates after eating bagel

A newborn baby was kept in hospital for five days after her mother tested positive for opiates, because she had eaten a poppyseed bagel.

Elizabeth Eden tucked into the bagel before she went into labour in April, and found her snack choice had serious consequences when she tested positive for opiates.

Her doctor had to report her to Maryland state, and her daughter was kept in the Baltimore hospital for five days.

The new mother was then assigned a case worker to review the incident.

Ms Eden recalled a school health class, where she had learned poppyseeds can give a false positive on opiate tests.

The case worker closed her file when she heard the explanation.

According to the Federal Institute for Risk Assessment, excessive consumption of poppyseeds, especially during pregnancy, should be avoided until the morphine level in the seeds is lowered.
